Tag 122 und 123

In Rotura spürt man, dass Neuseeland an der Grenze zweier Kontinentalplatten liegt. Überall gibt es Orte mit aufsteigenden heißen Dämpfen, Quellen und Seen, die zu kochen scheinen. Auf dem Campingplatz gibt es erst mal freie Hot Tubs. Auch am nächsten Morgen regnet es weiter, und so starten wir langsam zum nächsten Ziel, den Waimangu Thermic Valley. Durch einen Vulkanausbruch im Jahre 1886 entstand hier eine Seenlandschaft und auf der Lava üppige Natur- doch die Seen sind alle am kochen und machen einen magischen Eindruck.  Die 9 km Wanderung entlang von heißen Bächen und Seen war ein echter Höhepunkt, und am Ende kam sogar die Sonne heraus.

Abends ging es weiter zum Lake Taupo, dem größten See Neuseelands, auch ein Vulkankrater. Dort schliefen wir am Ufer auf einem kleinen Platz und planten die nächsten Tage. Das große Ziel, die 19,5 km lange Tangarino Alpine Crossing durch die Vulkanwelt zu schaffen. So gab es einen Tag mit Vorbereitungen auf diese sportliche Herausforderung. Morgen früh um 5.30 klingelt der Wecker, wir parken schon auf einer Wiese nah am Endpunkt und werden mit dem Bus zum Ausgangspunkt gebracht. Es kann auf 2000 Meter Höhe windig und kalt werden, aber für morgen ist trockenes Wetter angekündigt und wir sind alle aufgeregt. Am Horizont sieht man Schnee, und auch heute hat uns die Natur beim Fahren im Herbst einfach begeistert. 

Day 122 and 123

In Rotura you can feel that New Zealand lies on the border of two continental plates. Everywhere there are places with rising hot vapors, springs and lakes that seem to be boiling. There are free hot tubs at the campsite. It continues to rain the next morning, so we set off slowly to our next destination, the Waimangu Thermal Valley. A volcanic eruption in 1886 created a lake landscape here and lush nature on the lava – but the lakes are all boiling and make a magical impression.  The 9 km hike was a real highlight, and the sun even came out at the end.

In the evening we went on to Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand, also a volcanic crater. There we slept on the shore in a small campsite and planned the next few days. The big goal was to complete the 19.5 km Tangarino Alpine Crossing through the volcanic world. So we spent a day preparing for this sporting challenge. Tomorrow morning at 5.30 a.m. the alarm clock rings, we park in a meadow close to the end point and are taken to the starting point by bus. It can get windy and cold at an altitude of 2000 meters, but dry weather is forecast for tomorrow and we are all excited. Snow can be seen on the horizon, and today we were simply amazed by the natural surroundings while driving in the fall.
