Goodbye Hawaii

Tag 134 und 135

Hawaii hat sich sehr entspannt angefühlt. Mit einer Wohnung von 80m2 direkt am Strand, einem Chevrolet Bus mit 12 Sitzen  vor der Tür fühle ich mich schnell wie ein Amerikaner- das Land mit diesem Easy-Going Gefühl. So haben alle noch mal aufgetankt und das größte Normalitätsgefühl genossen. Platz in der Wohnung, Essen kochen, Zeit für Schule, Entspannung, die Rückkehr vorbereiten, am Strand abhängen. Es war ein wilder Ritt, fast 5 Monate weg von daheim, so viele Länder, so viele Eindrücke, und meistens zu acht. Insgesamt ist es erstaunlich, wie gut alles gemeinsam funktioniert hat. Ich habe jeden Tag genossen und bin vor allem dankbar und habe auch richtig Energie in Deutschland wieder zu starten. Morgen in einer Woche sind wir wieder daheim. Aber zuvor geht es noch heute nach New York, und in vier Tagen nach Island. 

Auf den Haleakala-Vulkan zum Sonnenaufgang haben wir es doch nicht mehr geschafft, das Wetter, die Reservierung und Nadines Zahn spielten nicht mit. Aber schon auf halber Strecke bei 1500 Meter war der Ausblick großartig. Auf der Wanderung trafen wir auf eine Gruppe an Disc-Golf-Spielern, die im Wald hier ihren Parcour hatten. Und abends am Hausstrand und gestern am Big Beach waren sehr schön.  Nadine besuchte noch eine Deutsche aus Bayern, die mit ihren Kindern in Haiku lebt. Das Leben ist sehr teuer geworden, meint sie- ein Vollkornbrot kostet 16 Euro- das muss man sich leisten können. 

Morgens im Meer zu schwimmen ist aber wunderschön, die benachbarten Vulkaninsel sieht man am Horizont und gefühlt ist jeden Tag schönes Wetter. Nadine entdeckt beim Schnorcheln gleich mal zwei Meeresschildkröten. Und das Grün ist einfach erstaunlich. Ich trinke einen meiner seltenen Cappucinos im Jaws, einem Café und Restaurant am Straßenrand in Haiku, und es ist eine wunderbare Natur um mich herum. Die meisten Bedienungen und Arbeiter sprechen Spanisch, und so freue ich mich über ein kleinen Smalltalk- fühlt sich immer so vertraut an. Überhaupt hat es eben diese lässige Atmosphäre einer ganz besonderen Urlaubsdestination. 

Tara freut sich mit Morpheus am meisten auf New York, für mich ist es der vierte Besuch und mich hat es jedes Mal fasziniert und begeistert. Es geht 6,5 Stunden von Kahalui nach Dallas, und von dort 3,5 Stunden nach New York. Die USA haben einfach enorme Ausmaße. Und es ist das erste Mal ein großer Zeitunterschied- von den 12 Stunden zu Berlin sind es zu New York schon mal 6. Wir werden uns daran gewöhnen früh aufzustehen. 

Day 134 and 135
Hawaii felt very relaxed. With an 80m2 apartment right on the beach, a Chevrolet bus with 12 seats outside the door, I quickly felt like an American – the country with that easy-going feeling. So everyone refueled and enjoyed the greatest sense of normality. Space in the apartment, cooking dinner, time for school, relaxing, preparing to return, hanging out on the beach. It was a wild ride, almost 5 months away from home, so many countries, so many impressions, and mostly eight of us. Overall, it’s amazing how well everything worked together. I’ve enjoyed every day and above all I’m grateful and have the energy to start again in Germany. We’ll be back home in a week’s time tomorrow. But before that, we’re off to New York today and Iceland in four days‘ time.
We didn’t make it to the Haleakala volcano for sunrise after all, the weather, the reservation and Nadine’s tooth didn’t play ball. But halfway up, at 1500 meters, the view was magnificent. On the hike we met a group of disc golf players who had their course here in the forest. And the evenings at the Beach in front of us and yesterday at Big Beach were very nice. Nadine visited a German woman from Bavaria who lives in Haiku with her children. She says that life has become very expensive – a wholemeal loaf of bread costs 16 euros – you have to be able to afford that.
But swimming in the sea in the morning is wonderful, you can see the neighboring volcanic island on the horizon and it feels like it’s nice weather every day. Nadine discovers two sea turtles while snorkeling. And the greenery is simply amazing. I have one of my rare cappuccinos at Jaws, a café and restaurant on the roadside in Haiku, and I’m surrounded by beautiful nature. Most of the waiters and workers speak Spanish, so I’m happy to have a little small talk – it always feels so familiar. In general, it has this relaxed atmosphere of a very special vacation destination.
Tara is looking forward to New York the most with Morpheus, for me it’s my fourth visit and it has fascinated and inspired me every time. It’s a 6.5-hour drive from Kahalui to Dallas, and from there 3.5 hours to New York. The USA is simply enormous. And it’s the first time there’s a big time difference – from 12 hours in Berlin to 6 hours in New York. We’ll get used to getting up early.
